Railway is a significant invention
of the modern civilization. While serving as an engine of industrial growth
during the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, Railway has
been blended into the daily lives of the people as their familiar means of
transportation. When we review modern art from the perspective of Railway, we
see that many artists use it for their theme and/or motif: trains, stations,
rail tracks and interior scenery of trains etc. Those will include the esrlier
memorial paintings from the English railway development period, the French
impressionists and even imaginary works by Surrealists. Even for the Japanese
modern time, it would be impossible to forget such an important art work as "Nishiki-e"
in which Railway testifies its influence caused into the time. In fact, Railway
had been appeared on various media including printing art, posters and
photographs.
